A gong is an East and Southeast Asian musical percussion instrument that takes the form of a flat, circular metal disc which is hit with a mallet. The gong traces its roots back to the Bronze Age around 3500 BC. I saw my first gong up close where I trained to be a yoga teacher. My yoga teacher described it as shortcut to a higher level of consciousness. I was inspired to design my own little gong to be worn as a necklace. There is no mallet with my necklace. It is NOT a miniature musical instrument. It is to remind the wearer to their connection to the gong & higher vibrations.
My gong starts with a 1 1/2" piece of round brass which I etch to create a gong-like pattern. I use a salt water electricity method. Each etch turns out differently, making a one-of-a-kind result. I solder each connection between the brass pendant and sterling silver chain. I hammer out a piece of thick brass wire to create the curved hanging bar. I patina the pendant to bring out the hammered texture and etch. The necklace part is made with black flat suede cord 2 mm in thickness. You will not find a gong like this anywhere else. This piece is extremely well made and will stand the test if time.
